How it works

Step 1. Plot a path to success with a Roadmap Session

Life without fear starts here. We understand that, for someone with a phobia of dogs, the thought of getting treatment can be overwhelming. You may be wondering if treatment will even work.

In this 50-minute session, we'll help you plot a path from fear to freedom.

Psychologist, Anthony Berrick, will conduct an assessment and diagnosis of your (or your child's) phobia, answer all your questions about treatment, and make a plan to help you overcome your fear of dogs for good.

If you're not able to come to Sydney for treatment, we will use this session to help you plan alternative treatment options so you can get started on your own.

The Roadmap Session can be held in-person in Sydney CBD, or by phone/video call.

Session fee: $225 (Medicare rebate: $88.25)

Step 2. Break free from fear for good with 1‑on‑1 Therapy

After the Roadmap Session, you're ready to overcome your phobia of dogs for good with 1‑on‑1 Therapy.

This is where the magic happens. We don't like to boast, but we believe we offer the best treatment programs for cynophobia in the world - for kids and adults alike.

In 1‑on‑1 Therapy, we use evidence-based behaviour therapy techniques to fundamentally change how your brain reacts to dogs. As well as feeling confident around dogs, you will also learn how to interact confidently with them.

We offer treatment programs for clients based in Sydney, as well as an intensive treatment program for visiting clients. 1‑on‑1 Therapy is fun, relaxed, and empowering. Most importantly, it works.

Therapy begins at a level you feel comfortable with, and progresses gradually over time as you gain confidence. No two phobias are quite the same, so this process is completely individualised.

A scientific review of 33 clinical trials conducted over three decades, concluded that the type of behaviour therapy which we utilise in our clinic is the most effective treatment for phobias when compared to other treatment approaches (Wolitzky-Taylor et al, 2008).

Standard treatment program

Ideal for clients over 8 years old

Our standard treatment program is designed for adults, and kids over 8 years old, who are able to attend regular weekly or fortnightly therapy sessions.

This program consists of five one-hour therapy sessions, plus a final two-hour session.

We're so confident that you'll love 1‑on‑1 Therapy, if you decide not to continue after the first session, we'll give you a full refund for the remaining sessions.

Our treatment programs are extremely effective, and the vast majority of clients make a full recovery from cynophobia, however we can arrange additional single therapy sessions if needed.

Total cost: $1,995 (Medicare rebate: $664.80)

Junior treatment program

Ideal for clients under 8 years old

Our junior treatment program is designed for kids aged 4 to 8 years who are able to attend regular sessions.

For younger children, we keep our therapy sessions short and sweet with a focus on fun. This program consists of six half-hour therapy sessions, plus a final one-hour session.

As with the standard treatment program, we offer a full refund of the remaining sessions if your child doesn't want to continue with 1-on-1 Therapy after the first session.

Total cost: $1,495 (Medicare rebate: $621.10)

Intensive treatment program

Ideal for clients visiting Sydney for treatment

Our intensive treatment program is designed for clients visiting Sydney for treatment and is usually completed over two consecutive days.

The intensive program consists of two three-hour therapy sessions and also includes a follow-up remote phone/video consultation after treatment, to ensure that you have guidance when you return home and are able to continue to build on the progress you make during 1‑on‑1 Therapy.

Additional remote consultations can be arranged if needed to provide ongoing support until you achieve your treatment goals.

Total cost: $1,895 (Medicare rebate: $284.15)

‘I didn’t believe that it could be fixed’: Interview with a cynophobia client

By Anthony Berrick | August 12, 2018

Rebecca contacted us in mid-2017 to enquire about getting treatment for her severe phobia of dogs, which was causing her a lot of distress and seriously impacting on her quality of life.

After completing the cynophobia treatment program, she was able to walk comfortably in an off-leash dog-park and interact confidently with dogs for the first time in her life.
